Marcher sur le Camino ou randonner/ Differences between walking on the camino and hiking

Walking on the camino or hiking

Sometimes we think hiking on the Camino is like hiking on our favorite mountain.

When you hike in the classical sense of the term, is a few hours or days. The material that you take with you  (bags, clothes, shoes) must be effective (waterproof - breathable jackets and pants, fleece jackets for thermal protection, backpack with a good transfer of the weight on the hips ) and strong (ripstop nylon) to be durable.

The weight of the material isn't the main focus, even if it is taken into account. The material taken is specific to the weather (cold, hot, rain) for the period that you hike.

On the Camino, when yous start from Le Puy to Santiago, you walk for 60 days  at least. 30 days if it is the French part and the same for the Camino Frances. Not only the stuff you bring must be efficient, but it should be extremely light. Each gram,  carried on the millions steps you walk on the way, literally wears the body.

In addition, the gear must be able to be efficient for a wide range of meteo conditions. If you go in October from Le Puy en Velay you will encounter temperatures of over 30 degrees Con  asphalt, days of 8 hours of heavy rain repeated for several days, temperatures of -10 ° C for weeks on the Meseta in Spaine before reaching Compostela.

The difficulty is to choose a light and versatile material to be able to cope with any weather.
